History of Dartmouth Powwow
In 1970, newly inaugurated President John Kemeny pledged to redress the historic lack of opportunities for Native Americans in higher education. Due to his efforts, Dartmouth College has one of the strongest and most diverse Native American communities among the academic community. It was during the Kemeny Administration that Dartmouth's Native and Indigenous community held its first Powwow in 1972. The Powwow has since grown in both size and scope. What was once a small gathering at Storrs Pond, and later at the Bema, is now an event that attracts upwards of 1,500 people from all over the country.
The Dartmouth Powwow brings together all facets of our community. The Powwow is an opportunity for Dartmouth students, faculty, staff, and all the Upper Valley to celebrate Indigenous culture from many different tribes and traditions.

Dartmouth Powwow Details
Each year, the Dartmouth Powwow is held on the Saturday of Mother's Day Weekend. Below are answers to commonly asked questions:
- Location & Timing: Grand Entry begins at 12:00p on The Green (rain location: Leede Arena) and ends by 5:00p.
- Parking: Shuttles are available from the free visitor parking at Dewey Lot and are marked by A-Frames.
- Ticketing: This event is non-ticketed and seating is first-come, first served. Accessible seating will be marked off for use.
- Dancer Day Pay: Registered dancers will receive $60 at the conclusion of the Powwow at the marked table. Dancers will also receive lunch.
- Competition Winners: Winners will receive their prize money after the announcement of the wins at the marked table.
- Vendors: Vendor applications will be available in January 2027.
- Other Details: Porta Potties and Water Refill Stations are located on The Green. For changing areas, dancers are invited to use public restrooms and single-stall bathrooms in the Collis Center, 2 N Main Street.
